<p>Lying at the heart of Lucknow within India’s colorful tapestry of history is the Lucknow Residency. It is part of the proud heritage of the city during India’s struggle for freedom from British Rule. The British Residency, built in the early 1800s, was the official residence of the British General in Oudh, a princely state under the British East India Company. It became a witness to a moment in history that shaped Indian Independence when it was attacked and besieged for over 90 days in 1857, during the Indian Mutiny (the Sepoy Mutiny). The Outstanding Defence of the Lucknow Residency and the courage and tenacity of the British soldiers led by the famous hero John in Havelock earned them the respect of the besiegers. The residence and outlying buildings with their Mosque form part of this heroic defense of Indian Independence.</p>
