Capitol Complex

📍 Chandigarh , Chandigarh , India

One of Le Corbusier’s most massive architectural compositions of modern architecture, the capitol complex emerged from a distinct geopolitical and cultural context.
It has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Capitol Complex is ideally situated against the backdrop of Shivalik Hills at the geographic and topographic “Head” of the city. In addition to sculptures like the rotating Open Hand, the Tower of Shadows, Geometric Hill, and memorials, the ensemble comprises the Palace of Assembly, the Secretariat, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court. It is renowned for its exposed concrete, pronounced brise-soleils, and early experiments in passive climate design; UNESCO inscribed it in 2016 as part of The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier. While many buildings are still in use as government offices and interior access may be restricted, visitors usually stroll the lengthy esplanade to take pictures of the monumental silhouettes and public sculptures.
